One Arizona Couple is Living Love Around the World
April 23 2019
Melinda and Paul Gunther Jr. were home watching an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” when they realized there were people all around them that needed help, but not the kind of help this television program provided.
“[The show] would come build this giant house and they wouldn’t know who the people were and then they would leave and nobody would ever help [the families] again,” said Live Love co-founder Paul Gunther Jr. Many of the families featured on this show ended up losing the new homes due to higher bills and not enough income to accommodate these new expenses.
The Chandler couple saw needs within their neighboring communities and sought to help. What started as an annual service day has now evolved into something even bigger. Live Love is an Arizona based nonprofit organization that now offers monthly service days as well as programs for children, community soccer games, an annual 5K, Thanksgiving dinner drives and much more to one Chandler neighborhood full of stories of struggle.
Co-founder Melinda Gunther said, “What started as Live Love day, as an annual event, over the next few years we realized we were doing this one giant feel good day and you don’t build relationships by showing up once a year.”
Paul Gunther Jr. grew up the son of a missionary pastor and lived in various countries all over the world so he is no stranger to hardship. He said, “The more you see the more you want to do so by seeing the world it made me want to go help the world. If you don't see it you won’t know it’s there.”
Live Love emphasizes the importance of building relationships with the individuals within the communities over the long term rather than going in and helping every once in a while for the warm feelings associated with service projects and coming back only when you want more.

For example, Live Love has put down roots in Malawi, a country in Southeastern Africa, where they have worked with the community to try to help it thrive. The nonprofit started working with community leaders in 2012 to help create sustainable solutions for the communities.
Rather than dropping off gallons of clean water or medical supplies Live Love helped one Malawi community build a well and a medical clinic that will remain functional much longer than other temporary solutions. They have also implemented programs to help build relationships within the communities.
“When you start to get to know a neighborhood or a village you learn the things that are their biggest obstacles and challenges and how to work together to move those out of the way or use those as opportunities to try something different,” said Melinda Gunther.
Ruth Maya has lived in the Chandler neighborhood for 15 years and works as a link between the people who make up the community and Live Love. Maya said, “Live Love has impacted my family by giving us love and support and not just to us but everybody around us. They show the true meaning of the word love and living it.”
In the near future, Live Love is planning on breaking ground on a new project in Chandler called The Oasis. This community center will include spaces for vocational classes such as woodworking and welding as well as skills such as coding for the younger community members so they can enter the career field with skills that will soon be vital to success.
Additionally there will be a community garden and a gathering space for community members to have quinceañeras, family reunions, weddings and more. There is also an after school program in the works planned to start this fall that will eventually take place in the community center.
Melinda Gunther plans on hosting a community meeting to find out, as she said, “what are the top priorities for the neighbors.”
The oasis will be a collaborative project including members of the community, Live Love workers that have been working with the neighborhood for years, city officials, and local businesses that may want to be involved.
If all goes as planned, ground will be broken by the end of this calendar year and The Oasis is projected to be completed by the end of 2020. Visit www.whatislivelove.org for more information and upcoming events.
